Ziel des Projektes ist ein für durchschnittliche Mac-  oder PC-Benutzer schnell zu installierender, 
komfortabel benutzbarer und sofort einsetzbarer  Next-Generation INS-Server (Internet, NAS, SAN)
mit folgenden Features:

  - Basissystem mit root-SSH Zugang, Winscp-und Midnight Commander Filebrowser
  - SMB NAS Dateiserver für Mac/ Win Arbeitsgruppen und Windows Domänen (opensolaris cifs)
  - NFS und iSCSI SAN und iSCSI-Storage für Apple's Time-Machine (opensolaris comstar)
  - Apache Webserver mit Perl, PHP, GD-Grafikbibliothek
  - Mysql Datenbankserver mit PHPMyadmin
  - Backupserver
       sowie für Experten -(nicht Teil des napp-it Konzepts, Installation mit apt-get install programm bei nexenta)
       - weitere Server z.b. mail... (siehe ubuntu server)

mit der durch Raid-Z3 und Plattenscrubbing überragenden Datensicherheit von opensolaris, den fast unbegrenzten Snapshots durch zfs-copy on write, erweiterbaren  controllerunabhängigen Plattenpools, Windows acl's auf Dateien und Freigaben, snapshots via Windows-Eigenschaft "vorherige Version" ,Hybrid Pools mit SSD Schreib-Lesecache und Deduplizierung auf Blockebene. (ein Storage Killer-Feature von opensolaris, Kopien von Dateien werden nur einmal gespeichert, ab sofort verfügbar )

Die freie und durch den Benutzer anpassbare Web-Management-Software napp-it ist die Basis dieser INS- Network Appliance auf Grundlage von Nexentacore3. Ein einfaches Installationsmanual erlaubt die schnelle Installation des napp-it Servers. Eine vorkonfigurierte bootfähige Iso-CD ist geplant


Goal is a next generation basic INS-Server (Internet, NAS, SAN) installable and usable for people with no or minimal opensolaris knowledge (like me a year ago), easy to use and ready to run as:

  - base system with root ssh-access via putty, winscp and midnight commander file browser
  - smb fileserver for Mac/ Win workgroups and windows domains  (OpenSolaris cifs)
  - nfs and iSCSI san and iSCSI strorage for Apple's Time-Machine (OpenSolaris comstar)
  - Apache webserver with perl, php and gd graphic library
  - mysql database server
  - backupserver
      and for experts- (not part of napp-it concept, install per apt-get install programm on Nexenta)
      -  other server apps like mail...(see Ubuntu server)

with the superior data security due to zfs3 raidlevel and drive scrubbing build into opensolaris,  nearly unlimited snapshots with copy on write, extendable and controller independant drivepools, windows acl's on files and shares, snaps via windows previous version, hybrid pools with ssd read and write cache and block based deduplication. (copies of files will be stored only once, this storage  killer feature is the the current developer release of opensolaris, available now)

Die Bedienung soll so weit wie möglich mit einem Browser erfolgen. Die Weboberfläche ist durch den Benutzer anpassbar und erweiterbar und kann durch Verweise auf Webseiten zu einem individuellen Hilfesystem erweitert werden.
